Birthdays are one of the important days in our lives because they remind us the beauty and meaning of life.
Children love birthdays. The first reason that birthdays are so attractive to children is the birthday cake, especially for kids who are just turning two and who are only allowed cake on special occasions.
Two-year-olds are just beginning to realize that they have the freedom to make choices, including who they will invite to their party and what kind of cake they will eat. They enjoy being in charge and having ownership of their lives.
Parents also have difficult decisions to make. Many of Judy’s friends recently turned two and she was invited to three KFC parties. That was simply too much junk food so we had to decline some invitations without being rude, which was no easy task.
With two children, two parents and four grandparents, we have eight family birthdays each year. My family tends to reserve big celebrations for once-in-a-decade birthdays, like when someone turns 50. For those events, we typically hold a big family dinner.
We celebrate our birthdays in a Western style: invitations, wrapped gifts and best wishes. While it can be easy to overlook adult birthdays in favor of our children, these birthday gestures big and small remind us to be grateful and to appreciate life.
Although it can be time consuming, all our loved ones deserve a birthday celebration, even if it means eight birthday parties per year.
