Bike Helmets for Kids

While we cannot prevent our children from ever having an accident, we can prevent them from the serious consequences that could result -- especially those involving the head. Wearing a helmet is a simple way to ensure that your child’s head is protected, but sometimes that’s easier said than done.

There is no need to scare a young child into wearing a helmet but it is good to emphasize the importance of safety. After all, helmets save lives! Start the habit with your child as early as possible -- when riding a tricycle or bicycle, when rollerblading, even when riding in a bike trailer. Keep in mind that because toddlers may not have the neck strength to support the weight of a helmet, riding with a child under one year old is not recommended.

For some children, safety is not as much of a motivator as fashion or fun, and that’s okay! Work with your child to make sure the helmet fits accurately and comfortably, and has enough cushions and ventilation. Let your child pick their favorite color, design or shape of the helmet so that she will be more excited to wear it.

Luckily, heads don’t grow as quickly as feet, so your child will not outgrow his helmet as fast as he outgrows his shoes. Take the time to pick out a good one and it can last for a long time!

Of course, the single best way to encouraging your child to wear a helmet is to wear your own helmet. Be excited and consistent in your safety habits and the ideal will take root. Because wearing a helmet will seem more natural if everyone does it, encouraging other parents and friends to wear their helmets too!
