Time flies so fast! I have already worked at Sunshine Home more than half a year. In my time here I have got to know many children.  Some of them are very gentle and quiet, some are very active, some are cheerful, and others are lively. Each student’s personality is unique. No matter what type of personality the child has, they all need time to adapt to the new school environment. When we use love, patience, and persistence to care for them, they will adapt to the school setting much faster and easier.

Melody is a great example of a girl who has adapted well to the new environment. 

Melody is very quiet and dependent on her grandpa and grandma. She was able to drink, eat, and use the bathroom without a problem, but she had problems going to sleep.  At first, she could not fall asleep at naptime because she missed her grandma.  Even her mother was unable to help her fall asleep. On the second day at school she began to yell very loudly during naptime, disrupting the other students.  She was crying out for her grandma and grandpa.  We tried everything to calm her down, but nothing seemed to be working.  Other students were getting upset, covering their ears and crying out “too loud!”

Eventually, we discovered that she likes to draw and listen to stories.  We would let her draw, and read stories to her when she would get upset.  Slowly, little by little, she began to improve and not cry out for her grandparents as much.  

Over the course of several months she became acclimated to the school and is now happy to attend.  She even told the teacher that she has “grown up” and no longer needs to be accompanied to sleep.  Now she will say to her mom that she loves her at home, Melody is now a bright, cheerful, generous, and confident girl.
