LETTER FROM THE EDITOR Paying Attention to Detail

Parents often come to Montessori because it has a math focus. I like that too but what I love is the emphasis on an attention to detail.

Maria Montessori based her methodology on the observation of how children act in real life. It’s a system that recognizes kids pay attention to detail and that we should do the same.

As adults, our minds filter out so much of what we see -- a dog walking down the road, trash on the street, the color of a fence. But kids focus on all the things that are new to them but that we take for granted or see but don’t really see.

That’s why the Sensorial Area of the Montessori room is all about slowing down and focusing on each of our senses. Our students practice feeling the difference between soft and rough, light and heavy.

We do this in class because our kids do this in real life. For example, Judy will look at me and see that I’m wearing a new pair of earrings. She pays attention in a way that even my husband doesn’t!

As adults, we can also learn from our kids and from Montessori. It can be really valuable to slow down and smell the roses, metaphorically and literally.

It’s also a reminder to me be a good role model. When I cut corners and think my peers won’t notice, I’m often right. But my kids sure notice!

As a family, we always try to keep this in mind. We try to have fresh flowers at home, to tidy up our beds each morning and to eat with proper etiquette. We try to do the right thing and pay attention to detail so that our kids will learn the right things from us.
