All parents love their children, but part of growing up is learning how to take care of yourself. It can be tempting to maintain a dynamic in which they rely on us. However, it is our job as parents to teach our children independence. There are a few ways to encourage this.

Parents need to be patient and resilient. You will encounter situations in which your child struggles to do something very simple. Some parents will take over and complete the task for their child, but this stunts growth. Children learn through practice. Instead, encourage them to meet the challenge on their own. Once the deed is done, say some positive words. This will compel them to try things on their own more often. 

Let your child pick up their toys, put on their shoes, and change their clothes them self. It might be a slow and frustrating process, but it is necessary for their development. Don’t be discouraged if your child does not become independent overnight. It takes time and continuous reinforcement. Encourage them to not be afraid of difficulties, and they will become independent.
