Rethinking the Meaning of Holidays

When I was a bit younger, holidays meant a backpack and making up travel plans on the go. I would stay longer in one place if I liked it or move on to the next destination if the original plan was less exciting than I expected. It was fun not knowing what would happen next!

Spontaneous travel with a newborn and a toddler? Not so much. Nowadays, every vacation starts with meticulous planning, including contingency plans for every possible scenario. We pack triple the amount of clothing because we can count on the kids getting their sleeves wet, peeing on the their pants or spilling on their coats.

Changing plans mid-vacation is now a terrible idea because it’s no fun to carry bulky luggage for unexpected weather or extra days. Sitting nicely in a child safety seat for a two-hour drive is challenge enough for the kids. No need to ask them to handle spontaneous changes!

Hence, our holiday journeys have become shorter but no less precious. I now favor stay-cations, spending time with my family at a nearby a park, going for a walk in the community or simply staying home and playing with the kids and my husband.

Holidays still mean hanging out with the family, but with a minimum of hassle and travel.

No matter the length our location of our vacations, I am more grateful than ever for being able to stay with my family and to find peace and happiness in our home life.
