Unconscious Education

Children are like little sponges, able to absorb and learn even when they are not intentionally try to. Some have even said that young children are able to take in anywhere from 5 to 10 pieces of information simultaneously!

For example, after listening to an English song 5-10 times, a child will develop a strong impression of the song. After double the number of listens, a child will be able to recite this song on his own. In Montessori education this is sometimes called “Unconscious Education.”

As teachers we want to prepare an ideal environment for children to best utilize these amazing abilities. This means creating a safe and loving environment where children can comfortably absorb the large amount of information that repeatedly surrounds them.

As teacher and parents we should work together to make our children feel deeply loved and peaceful. When a child feels highly secure and free from anxiety, his or her mind will be a happy little sponge. An insecure child, or a child who often feels hurried and lacking an ordered environment, may have more trouble focusing and picking up on surrounding information.

Let’s work together to make our students the best and happiest learners they can be. Love, peace, and learning go hand in hand!
