So here are a few helpful tips for reading at home.
Make reading a central part of your household.
Suffuse your home with books from which your child can choose.
Create cozy, themed areas around your apartment where your child will feel excited and happy to read a book.
Whenever there is downtime, encourage your child to snuggle up with you and a book.
When not actively reading together, have conversations with your children about the books you’ve read.
This helps them to develop a higher level of thinking. Encourage them to predict what might happen next, to retell what has already happened and or to compare and contrast characters.
You can ask the same kinds of questions while reading and at any part of the story. For younger readers, you can point to pictures and ask them what they see.
Xiamen has a wonderful public library. Sign up for a library card and make regular trips to the library with your kids.
There are hundreds of books available and you’ll never run out of options.
Allow your children to choose a book that interests them and find a cozy spot to read with them.
This will not only encourage them to read more but also teaches them responsibility in caring for others’ property!
