Learning Math at Home

A strong knowledge of math is incredibly beneficial for every child it’s not a subject that comes easily to everyone.

Practicing math at home with your children can help build their confidence and understanding in this subject!

With a bit of dedication and ingenuity, you can help your children become mini-mathematician with a few fun and interesting learning strategies.

Make numbers a part of everyday tasks and activities.  Numbers are the basis for math skills, so try to expose your child to numbers as early as possible.

While you’re at the supermarket, you can practice counting different fruits or food items. Or if you’re waiting in line, have your child practice counting to make the time pass. Count anything and everything you can with your child!

Identifying shapes is another important and basic concept in math. You can make learning shapes fun by turning it into a game.

You could take your children to a park or garden and try to see who can find items that are shaped like circles, squares or triangles. Whoever finds the most shapes wins!

It’s also a wonderful idea to use language that is associated with math concepts!

You can practice using quantity and comparison phrases -- a lot, a few, less than and more than -- by incorporating them into your daily life.

If you’re in the grocery store, ask your daughter to put a few strawberries in a bag. If she gives you more than five, say: “That’s not a few, that’s a lot!”

You can also ask your child estimation questions. For example, you could ask: “How many strawberries do you think are in this bowl?” For older children, you could ask: “How long do you think it will take for the cup to fill with water?”

Learning is at its best when you go beyond pen and paper. Bring math into the real world and have some fun while learning!
