Creating a Home Learning Space

There’s no reason that learning should be limited to the classroom! You don’t need to be a professional educator to create a conducive learning environment for your child in your own home.

The first step to creating a home learning space is to designate a low-traffic area of your home to become your child’s personalized space. This might be anything from a corner of the living room to a spare bedroom.

Natural lighting is also ideal if possible. A study done by the University of Nebraska shows that natural lighting in learning environments enhances performance and creativity!

Declutter the space and make sure that every item in the learning space has a place. This will help your child choose her activity with ease and encourage her to clean up when she is done.

Be intentional about the items you include in the learning space. Every item should have a purpose while also having the potential to be an open-ended resource, leaving room to spark curiosity and encourage exploration.

For example, a mirror can be used for seeing towers of blocks from different angles. It can also be used to practice writing, drawing or tracing with a dry-erase marker.

The best at-home learning spaces are organized, comfortable and quiet with a range of hands-on activities such as music, art, reading, writing and puzzles.

They offer a variety of seating options such as chairs, beanbags or reading nooks so that your child can move around and switch up positions as she learns and explores.
