Dearest children, have you started to notice that there are many Christmas trees, wreaths and even Santa Claus on the streets? We are heading into December and Christmas, a major holiday, is approaching!
For Christmas, Sunshine Home Books & Toys has designed a series of themed workshops; with the aim to help our children enjoy the festive atmosphere while having fun using their hands and minds.
Arts & Crafts Workshops
• Christmas Music Box
In this workshop, we will use our hands to mold the clay into a Christmas tree, snowman, and small house. Then we put each clay model together and assemble them on a box to create a beautiful Christmas music box. Turn the bottom and the box will play a Christmas song. By working with clay, children are able to develop their manual dexterity, fine motor skills, concentration and aesthetic judgment.
Tips: Working with clay can be very difficult for some children so we only welcome children over 5 years old to join in this workshop!
• Christmas Wreath
The Christmas wreath is an essential decoration for Christmas; it’s meant to protect children from evil spirits during the New Year. Join us as we make a wreath out of felt! While learning about the elements of Christmas wreath, children will work on developing their creativity, imagination and manual dexterity.
• Paper Quilling
Paper quilling, is a unique form of paper art, in which we create a beautiful painting by rolling, pinching, and pasting paper together. The teacher will teach the children to use special tools to roll long and thin pieces of paper into small “parts”, and then combine different shapes to create a beautiful Christmas tree. This workshop allows children to develop their creativity and fine motor skills.
Scientific Experiment Workshops
• Icy Christmas Tree
In last week’s workshop we learned how to make our very own snow and build a tiny snowman. In this workshop, we will make an icy Christmas tree using ice cubes. We will work together to figure out how stabilize the tree and how to secure each ice cube. Through observation and hands-on experience, the children will learn about the changes of water in different forms and enhance their problem-solving ability and visual acuity.
• The Magic Bell
How do we make a Christmas tree or snowman out of bells? How do we get the bells out of the narrow water bottle? Through this experiment, the teacher will lead the children to learn about magnets, an interesting scientific material, and magnetic force.
About the teacher
Sunita is a Montessori teacher from India. She has a Bachelor of Arts and a Master’s degree in English as well as a TEFL certificate. She has a Montessori diploma for teaching in both the Casa and Elementary classrooms. Sunita has more than a decade of teaching experience in India, Singapore and Nepal.
Sam is a qualified art teacher and has taught a full spectrum of creative subjects to all ages from children to University students. He's also taught English privately for a number of years as well as working as a freelance illustrator mainly within the magazine editorial world. He travelled across South America with his wife Talisa where they worked together in various small English schools and painted murals in every classroom along the way.
