MONTESSORI Great DIY Materials

Children love working with sensorial materials in the Montessori classroom. Every piece of equipment in class is designed to be touched and handled and has a specific purpose.

But Montessori and other educational materials don’t have to be restricted to the classroom. Educational and Montessori material but can be made at home using easily available materials or even by recycling common objects for education use.

It’s easier than you think to set up a miniature Montessori room complete with practical life, sensorial, language and math areas for your child. You can help to teach independence, develop hand-eye coordination, improve dexterity and refine motor skills right at home.

For a great Practical Life activity, fill a bowl with dry rice, beans, beads or little shells as a spooning activity. The child’s goal is to transfer the contents from one bowl to a second one using a spoon, tongs, chopsticks or fork. It’s a great way to build dexterity and teach self-feeding skills.

Even something as simple as a collection of colored clothespins in a basket can be a great way to strengthen small muscles. Simply explain to the child that [what] is the goal of the material and allow them to practice and experiment on their own.

You can also pair a small kettle or jug with a set of cups for your child to practice transferring water to and between cups. A bowl of water plus an ordinary bath sponge is a great way for your child to try absorbing water and squeezing it back out. It’s a fun way to practice cleaning the house or one’s own body.

Used perfume bottles or talcum powder containers can be repurposed as smelling bottles. Old jars or plastic bottles can be filled with beans, rice or little pebbles and can be used as sound cylinders or musical instruments.

A collection of buttons, beads, chopsticks or pencils can be great counting tools. Make your own number cards and combine them with the counters for your child to learn both abstract and concrete counting. You can even practice addition and subtraction work.

Our environment is filled with learning materials: practice counting or colors out in the real world by observing, leaves, cars or people. The possibilities are endless!
