Children are born with an instinctual love to play. Their brains are hardwired to have fun playing -- play is how they learn! Because the mental development of children varies by age, the suitability of specific toys for children differs by age.
Preparing the right set of toys for your children is a great way to help them learn.
Around the age of two or 2.5, children begin to be able to develop simple spatial and logical thinking. This is an age when boxes of nested shapes or a set of progressively larger bowls helps them to think about the physical shape of objects and the category of size -- big and small, heavy and light, etc.
Related toys include beaded strings and large puzzles. These toys help to develop manual dexterity and increase hand-eye coordination. They’re a great way to practice manipulating small objects and are pre-writing exercises for holding a pen or pencil.
This is also the age when children begin to distinguish colors and their names so colored blocks are quite useful.
And of course, kids at this age are building their imagination and creativity. Toys that let them play make-believe -- building blocks, miniature figurines -- are great prompts for their imaginative skills!
