DEALING WITH AIR POLLUTION Minimizing Risk for Our Children

The quality of air we breathe determines the health of the lungs as well as other organs. Indeed, clean air is a basic requirement of human health and well-being.

The role of air pollution in the development of respiratory diseases, including acute respiratory infections and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases, is well known.

Children are more likely to be affected because they breathe more air per pound of body weight than adults. And they are more susceptible to the effects of air pollution, because their airways are still developing.

Smaller particles, especially those under 2.5μm (PM2.5) reach deep into the lungs and can enter the bloodstream.

To fight air pollution, all of our classrooms have a whole-room air filtration system built by Lunos, a German company with more than 50 years of experience in air ventilation and filtration. Lunos products are installed in Asia, Europe and North America. Find more at www.lunos.de/en/.

Our Lunos air purifiers use a multilayer filter system combining both a prefilter and a HEPA filter. This helps to dramatically reduce the amount of airborne particulates in our rooms.

We always activate our air filter system on days when PM2.5 in Xiamen reaches the unhealthy level as listed at the following website: http://aqicn.org/city/xiamen/.

There are additional steps you can take at home to reduce your child’s exposure to air pollution:

• Use an air filtration system (but not one that generates ozone, which increases pollution);

• Avoid using anything that burns, including candles or incense;

• Keep the room clean by wet mopping to help reduce dust; and

• Don’t smoke.
