Telling Stories to Young Children

Props are a great addition to bringing life to a story. I use them for one of the most beloved Chinese stories in the Giraffes class, “The Crocodile and the Dentist.” I always bring a crocodile pillow and a toothbrush before reading the book. I also use other methods to make the story more interesting. 



I introduction the title very slowly. Then I ask the children questions about the cover such as “Where is the crocodile,” “Why is he going to the dentist,” “What do you think will happen?” Children like the suspense. It is important to play close attention to your tone. I use creative voices so that the experience is more enjoyable for the class. 



Asking questions throughout the reading ensures that the children are following along. By the end, the children understand that the crocodile’s tooth decayed because he didn’t brush his teeth; so he went to the dentist. They realize the importance of dental hygiene from this book. 



At the very end, the class takes turns brushing the crocodile’s teeth using the props. They all love this part. These methods of storytelling make reading much more fun for children. I feel so proud and happy when I see my students pick up “The Crocodile and the Dentist” of their own initiative.
