The Gentle Giraffes

I have just completed my first year at Sunshine Home and what a year it has been. During this first year, I was lead teacher of the Giraffes class, a time I hold very close to my heart. This article is a “thank you” to all of the students and to my wonderful team, especially my co-teacher Elaine and the giraffes’ caregiver, Bella.

Every day we had challenges, big and small, and they were all overcome because we worked together as friends to solve problems. If someone was feeling sad, we listened. If someone was happy, we celebrated. If someone didn’t understand, everyone, students and staff, would not stop until we found an easier explanation. Even when everyone found out I didn’t understand who Ultraman was, they tried to contain their laughter and answered any silly questions I had. (I now understand…beware of the Ulltra Slash attack!)

Life in Xiamen can be hard sometimes but those around me made it so much easier. Elaine was always there for me when I needed her, even from day one, when she helped translate the Chinese characters on my washing machine for me. Bella was normally the first person I saw on a school morning, wearing the biggest and warmest smile, setting my mood for the day. And everyday, a group of beautiful souls would fill our class and bring with them, joy, laughter and kindness.

As is life, situations change, and people move on. The Giraffes class now has a lovely new lead teacher who I’m sure is feeling the same love I did, but thankfully, my new position means I still get to see those happy faces every week.
