Help for Raising a Considerate Child

Raising a considerate child doesn’t come easy. Young children are naturally quite self-interested. Here are a few simple ideas that can help guide your child to become more considerate towards the feelings of others.

Children typically have difficultly distinguishing what’s theirs from what’s not. This is the simple cause of the little quarrels children frequently have when playing with others. When fighting over a toy a child might think that they love this toy so it should belong particularly to them alone. It makes perfect sense to them.

First of all, we should help children to understand that they can play with another’s toy for a time only with the owners’ prior consent. If the owner turns them down, they can only calmly accept the owner’s wishes. To help them accept another’s “No,” you can ask your child to think of his own favorite toys and how he wouldn’t want others to play with them without his approval, either. In this way, you can use a child’s natural self-centeredness at this stage to help him understand the importance of respecting the rights and feelings of others.

When it comes to playing games or completing tasks, it’s also important that children learn to accept failure and appreciate others. We should teach children to be gentle, caring and helpful. They should learn to use polite language and create positive, supportive relationships with others.

While having fun playing with other children, it’s common for someone to become upset. What helps is teaching children about being a good sport. Whether we win or lose, answer correctly or not, everyone involved should be considerate of the feelings of others. This means not laughing when another makes a mistake, not boasting when you defeat an opponent, and not becoming angry when you fail. This is an important lesson for playing games and daily life in general.
