Building Trust

Hi, I’m Amy, the Koala’s teacher here at Sunshine Home. I love to teach Chinese music! The purpose of our Chinese class is to allow children to learn by playing, or more simply put, to let our children enjoy themselves in class.

To help children have fun in class, I think, first of all, we should build trust with our children, which can often be achieved with two easy steps: shaking hands and hugging.

I will shake hands with the children when the first join our class. Children at first are often shy and unwilling, even avoiding me. But I will still put my hand in front of her/him, smile and warmly say, “Let’s shake hands, I am Amy.” I like children to call me by my first name, as it helps build a close relationship between us.

When a child is willing to reach out and shake hands with me, I will encourage him/her, “A little harder, please.” Then I will pretend to be in pain as a joke. The children always laugh when they see my funny look. At that moment, I will immediately feel that the child is no longer afraid of the new environment.

After the class is over, I will walk up to the child and ask, “Now, would you like to hug me?” When he/she takes the initiative to hug me, I can tell that he/she has become completely dropped their defensiveness. In the next class, I know he or she will have so much fun!
